Critical approaches to Human Rights

Over the years human rights have emerged as a language and politics of change deployed by governments and groups alike in their political claims. Moving beyond normative approaches to human rights that treat human rights doctrines, actors and institutions as instruments of emancipation, this course approaches human rights discourse and practices as an inquiry of anthropological investigation. It introduces participants to the various ways anthropologists have studied human rights in an aim to shed light on the use and abuse of human rights across various contexts.
