Culturally-centered Approaches to Development

Critical Cultural Approaches

In the course, Professor Dutta will explore the role of culture and context in shaping health meanings, values and practices, and the linkages of these practices to health and wellbeing.

Based on the argument that culture lies at the heart of how we come to understand and experience health, this course will explore the health promoting elements of culture, covering a variety of practices from food and nutrition to exercise and cultural performance.

Moreover, based on a review of existing approaches to health communication, it will outline the challenges that arise in health communication efforts when culture is not taken into account. Finally, the course will wrap up with an overview of a culture-centered approach to communicating health that creates entry points for cultural articulations of health through dialogue and listening.
